Maths
The study of mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.
The syllabus structure illustrates the important role Working mathematically plays across all areas of mathematics and reflects the strengthened connections between concepts.
A student develops understanding and fluency in mathematics through:
· exploring and connecting mathematical concepts
· choosing and applying mathematical techniques to solve problems
· communicating their thinking and reasoning coherently and clearly.
Mathematics K–10 outcomes and their related content are organised in:
· Number and algebra
· Measurement and space
· Statistics and probability
At Barham High School, we recognise that students have different strengths across these different areas. To help cater for these differences in Years 7 and 8, we arrange our class structure around the students’ understanding of the topic about to be started. Those who have a good understanding can be extended into more difficult types of questions. Those who have not yet mastered certain skills from earlier years can be caught up to the appropriate level. These changes are made regularly throughout the year.
In Years 11 and 12, the study of mathematics is optional. Courses offered include:

- Mathematics Life Skills
Mathematics Standard 1 has an optional HSC examination. Students need to sit for the examination for it to contribute to the calculation of their ATAR.
Students who do not want to study a mathematics course, but do want to develop their basic numeracy skills, can study a Content Endorsed course, Numeracy. This course does not have an HSC examination, so cannot contribute to the calculation of an ATAR.
