Technological and applied studies

TAS

Technological and applied studies (TAS) is mandatory for all students in Year 7 and 8. Students can also select from a range of elective TAS subjects.


Technology and Applied Science education is about becoming independent, connecting with others and taking actions towards preferred futures that support individual and family wellbeing.

T.A.S. promotes students' thinking, knowing, investigating, creating, communicating, participating and reflection skills.

In TAS, students develop knowledge, understanding and skills through a design and production process using a range of tools, materials and techniques in theory and practical lessons.

The continuum of technology learning is:

• mandated from Kindergarten to Year 8 through Science and Technology K-6 and Technology Mandatory Years 7-8 syllabuses

• based on students becoming increasingly sophisticated in their ability to apply knowledge, skills and understanding to design and produce solutions

• optional for student specialisation in high school through a range of syllabuses addressing technologies and aspects of design.

The focus of our courses is to incorporate the use of technology through practical application in all subjects. Students participate in a range of activities with hands on experience.

Learning is enhanced through the use of technology, tools, techniques and skills with various materials such as textiles, food, wood and metals. Students have an opportunity to develop and enhance their skills by working with graphics, model making, information communications, media and computer technologies.

Assessments include practical and written tasks as well as portfolio-style documentation, industry studies, project work and examinations.

Mandatory Technology

During Years 7 and 8, students experience a variety of content areas including:

- Agriculture and Food Technologies

- Digital Technologies

- Engineered Systems 

- Material Technologies.

Students work practically with these materials developing skills and knowledge, while designing and manufacturing high quality projects that are supported with a portfolio of evidence.

Year 9 and 10 Electives

There are many practical, hands-on subjects where students develop basic skills and knowledge about the area of study. Students will undertake research tasks, complete projects using materials associated with that area, develop an 
understanding about tools, equipment and WHS procedures as well as complete complimentary folio work for their projects.

These senior courses enable students to develop skills and knowledge in the areas of their chosen study

• Fitness VET Years 11-12 (Certificate III in Fitness)

All courses are delivered by teachers passionate about their respective fields and who strive to see all students achieve their personal best.

Hospitality, Construction and Primary Industrials VET subjects contain two 35hr one-week blocks of work placement, while Metals and Engineering and Fitness only require 1 weeks of work placement where students have the rare opportunity to actively participate in a real business, giving them first-hand insight and experience. Many students are fortunate to gain apprenticeships and part time work as a direct result of these work placements.

Industrial Technology subjects provide an insight into the selected industry and how it operates within society today. Students have the opportunity in year 12 to manufacture a Major Project of their choice over the three terms. This allows students to engage with their creative side in the design process, showcase the extensive range of skills learnt and produce a high-quality product to show future employers.

Hospitality students are renowned for their excellent food service, high quality and ability to efficiently cater for large school and community function resulting in outstanding feedback.
